about
George Burton is redefining what a Black composer-improviser can author in the 21st century. Across acoustic jazz, modular synthesis, and orchestral and choral writing, the NAACP Image Award–nominated pianist and seven-year Sun Ra Arkestra veteran treats improvisation as compositional method and lineage as living material. With New York Times and NPR Critics’ Picks, a DownBeat four-star review, and a Washington Post rave, he now leads a new hybrid acoustic/electronic band of his own design.
