ABOUT:

Lex Korten is a performer and composer from New York City who has become a defining pianist of his generation in the contemporary Jazz community,  gathering accolades from worldwide audiences, publications and great luminary  figures alike. Lauded by The New York Times, All About Jazz, The Wire and other  outlets for his charismatic, vulnerable improvisatory approach and unquestionable  musicianship, Korten unyieldingly seeks to nurture a deeper multidirectional experience between artists and listeners, and to honor his adopted home among the great Black American Musical art forms.

Born and raised in Uptown Manhattan and musically reared in the sphere of Detroit’s jazz and experimental scenes, Korten first entered the spotlight at age 24 as a member of the Tyshawn Sorey Sextet. This early period was punctuated with a first prize win at the 2020 UNISA International Piano Competition in South Africa and the unfolding of extended stints with visionary bandleaders like Joel Ross, Jaleel  Shaw, Robert Hurst, Melissa Aldana, Caroline Davis, Mike Moreno, Morgan Guerin  and a host of others.Korten’s work spans an enormous breadth of soundscapes all amidst the foremost representatives of BAM’s young voices as he actively tours and promotes recordings with Zoh Amba, Milena Casado, Simon Moullier, Alex Hitchcock, Linda  Sikhakhane, Sasha Berliner and Alfredo Colón currently. His debut album Canopy(Sounderscore), a vivid departure from much of his other work, released in Fall 2025 to critical acclaim.
