Mark Guiliana

Hailed by The New York Times as “a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed,” Mark Guiliana brings the same adventurous spirit, eclectic palette and gift for spontaneous invention to a staggering range of styles. Equally virtuosic playing acoustic jazz, boundary-stretching electronic music, or next-level rock, he’s become a key collaborator with such original sonic thinkers as Brad Mehldau, Meshell Ndegeocello, Donny McCaslin, Matisyahu, and the late, great David Bowie.

Billy Martin

Best known as a member of the musical trio Medeski Martin & Wood, Billy Martin is an American composer, percussionist, visual artist, educator and record producer.

From the roots of the downtown scene he emerged with Medeski Martin and Wood, bridging the harmonic complexity of jazz, the conversational fluency of free improvisation, and the groove and swagger of classic R&B and funk. A series of albums and high-profile collaborations with John Scofield, John Zorn, iggy Pop, Natalie Merchant, and others, brought the band international acclaim.

Martin has relentlessly pursued diverse musical contexts, from free improvisation to chamber compositions to film scores. Much of his work is available via his Amulet Records label, which recently released the Road to Jajouka—a series of collaborations (produced by Martin) between the Master Musicians of Jajouka and such artists as Ornette Coleman, Flea, Marc Ribot, John Zorn, Lee Ranaldo, Bill Laswell, Mickey Hart, MMW and more.

Soul Gnawa

Founded by young Moroccan Musician Samir LanGus and drummer Daniel Freedman, Soul Gnawa is a unique collaboration of traditional Gnawa music and the best of NY groove and improvisation. Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, descended from slaves and soldiers brought to Morocco from Mali and Mauritania. Called “Moroccan Blues”, Gnawa music is believed to heal people possessed by Jinns or spirits.

Soul Gnawa combines tradition with the most modern sounds.. It retains the healing power and trance of Gnawa as it integrates energy from Daniel Freedman's drums and Grammy winner Jason Lindner’s Keys. Samir LanGus (Guimbri and vocals) is a Grammy nominated musician, LanGus began learning Gnawa music when he was 8 years old from the Gnawa Masters in Morocco. He is the founder of the acclaimed group Innov Gnawa.
